Take a ride on Directory Submission

A web directory is like a web bank of links and online information. It has got hundreds of categories and subcategories under which various websites are listed according to the relevance.

It is intriguing to note why being listed on a directory is of any consequence at all. I call it a circular path: You have a website (which is complete with content and not under construction), and you want to enlist it in various online directories available. Now you approach any directory and submit your website to the specific category your website is relevant to and get a listing. By doing this submission you have actually acquired for yourself, a valuable one-way link back to your website. Now popular search engines give prime importance to the number of one-way links your website has to its advantage. It helps to acquire certain leverage for the various attributes that the search engine uses to judge you and finally your website gets a boost in search engine rankings.

So next time a user searches for anything related to the product or service your website is offering, you get More Visibility in the fascinating online world.

Now the circular path I was referring to is aptly described in these words “There is a vicious cycle: you can't get search engine traffic, or other non-paid traffic, without inbound links; yet without inbound links or search engine traffic, how is anyone going to find you to give you inbound links?”

The above words really got me thinking…
So on this note I will leave you guys to get ready for the merry-go-round ride.

List of web directories

There are thousands of web directories on the Internet.

Here you can find some of the top quality ones!
List of Web Directories : PageStrength 5 and Above from Search Engine Land
Open Directory Project list of directories!
Yahoo's list of web directories

If you want to submit to a LOT of directories (when quality does not matter a lot), which is good at many times, you can consider taking a list from OneWayTextLink.com

You can also consider outsourcing directory submission service to one of the several companies around. That can save you a lot of time and frustration of doing the same thing over and over again.

Low pagerank directories are like penny-stocks!

Lots of time webmasters / site owners wonder if it is worth submitting their website to less popular directories.

In my opinion, they should take a try, because the returns / benefits is much higher than the effort / cost involved. It takes few cents to submit a website to a free online directory. And it is like a penny stock. If it does not click, those few cents are gone (not really!, since every incoming link helps). However if even 5% of the directories you submit to clicks, you are in for a huge bonus. Consider the following issues:

  • When a directory becomes popular, they are no longer free! This means you will have to pay for getting into the directory.
  • You may never remember that directory or come to know about it. If you ignore and your competitors do not, you are at the losing end.
  • Today the directory is small. However if the promoters are serious, the directory may become very big tomorrow, resulting in an early entry into a successful directory (with relative ease).

So, low pagerank directories are penny stock, with a very high probability of giving you very high returns on investment. So, go ahead and do directory submission to as many directories as you can or better outsource it to a company who does it for a reasonable price to save yourself the time and effort.
